Pfizer Withdraws Bextra from
Market
07/04/2005
Citing concerns regarding the risk of heart attacks, strokes,
"life threatening" skin reactions, and other
cardiovascular events the FDA requested that drugmaker Pfizer
withdraw Bextra from U.S. pharmaceutical markets.
The risks posed by Bextra outweigh its benefits, the FDA said.
"For now, patients should stop taking Bextra and contact
their physicians about appropriate treatment options,"
Pfizer said in a statement Thursday.

Bextra
(valdecoxib) is in a class of drugs called
nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Bextra works by reducing substances in
the body that cause inflammation, pain, and fever, and is used to reduce
pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis, adult
rheumatoid arthritis, and to treat painful menstruation.
Bextra’s label already warns against serious skin reactions as a
possible side effect, including Stevens-Johnson Syndrom, and some trials
found an increased risk of unspecified “cardiovascular events” in
Bextra patients who had cardiac bypass surgery.
If you, or a loved one, has taken Bextra and suffered any side effects,
